The issue of identity I must say is not one that is new to the world. However some individuals still do not understand the idea that your identity is unique to you and therefore should be upheld.

Being a YOUNG, BLACK, FEMALE, it is safe to say that my chances would have been extremely limited a couple of years ago. Even in some cases, although there is and continues to be a lot of talk about equality, my chances are still limited. But am  I to say that because of this ideology,  which mind you, has been etched in the far part of my not so black cerebral hemisphere, I would not try to pursue my goals?

Okay…not to digress from the issue at hand but I want to ask a question here?  When do you feel most fulfilled?    Do you feel fulfilled  when you are forcefully trying to act like something you are not? Do you smile when you know that you are actually killing yourself for a culture, a people who will still disregard you because you are not like them?  Or, will you be happy, content, elated even dare I say blessed to be your true self and know that although everyone may not necessarily accept you for who you are, you are still content.

Okay….Back to the issue at hand. According to Wikipedia, identity is the conception, qualities, beliefs, and expressions that make a person or group different from others. This description clearly states that identity makes individuals different from others. If so, why are some individuals trying to hide their identities? Why are people suddenly ashamed of who they were born to be? Why have people started caring so much about the colour of their skin?

I will like to ask another very important question to all individuals who think that their identity has created  a large chasm between themselves and success. Have other individuals with the “same” identity  not made it? Are these people better than any of us?…Oh I can hear all the “oos” and “aahs” and “everyone is differents.” I can see the question marks on your faces. But guess what this is the truth. Others have made it and so can we.

We are all created for success. We are all created to make the world a better place. There are enough aids around us which are supposed to help us achieve our goals. Your identity instead of being a stumbling block, should be a stepping stone. You should make the best out of who you are and forget about what others are saying. Socrates was called “an immoral corrupter of youth.” Thomas Edison’s teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” Michael Jordan was cut from his school basketball team. Stan Smith was rejected as a ball boy for a Davis Cup tennis match because he was “too awkward and clumsy.” All these individuals are seen as heroes today.

Enough said. The ball is in your court now. Remember that your identity instead of being a stumbling block, should be a stepping stone.
